Largest Muslim Nation Seals $9B Deal For J-10C Rafale Killers

Indonesia has officially announced plans to buy China’s J-10 fighter jets, making it the second Muslim Country after Pakistan to operate the advanced aircraft. The deal, worth nearly US$9 billion, marks Indonesia’s first purchase of Chinese-made warplanes as it works to modernize its military fleet.

Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin confirmed the decision on Wednesday, saying the J-10 jets would “soon be flying over Jakarta.” However, he did not provide details about the delivery schedule or the specific number of jets to be received.

Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said his ministry had already approved the funding. He added that the government would verify the aircraft’s delivery timeline with Beijing. “Everything should be ready,” Sadewa stated.

According to reports, Indonesia plans to acquire at least 42 J-10 fighter jets. This acquisition is expected to strengthen the country’s air defense and improve its regional security posture. The move also reflects Indonesia’s growing military cooperation with China.

Pakistan, another Muslim Country, was the first foreign operator of the J-10C variant. It signed a deal with China in 2020 to purchase 36 aircraft equipped with PL-15E air-to-air missiles. The Pakistan Air Force has already deployed about 20 of these jets.

The J-10C gained international attention when it was reportedly used by Pakistan during a border clash with India. The aircraft demonstrated its capabilities by downing several Indian fighter jets, including a French-made Rafale. This incident showcased the combat power and technological strength of China’s J-10 series.

Analysts believe Indonesia’s decision to buy these jets highlights Beijing’s growing influence in the defense sector, especially among Asian and Muslim Country allies. The deal underscores Indonesia’s strategic effort to balance its defense ties between China and the West while ensuring regional stability.
