Iran has announced the suspension of its visa-free entry rules for Indian tourists. From November 22, Indian travelers will need to obtain visas in advance for both entry and transit through Iran, according to Press TV.
The Iranian embassy in New Delhi confirmed the change on its X account, stating that Indian nationals holding ordinary passports will no longer be allowed visa-free entry. Travelers must now apply for a visa before visiting or transiting through the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Previously, in February 2024, India and Iran had agreed that Indian tourists could visit Iran without a visa once every six months. This visa-free entry allowed stays of up to 15 days but did not permit extensions.
The new policy is expected to affect many Indian travelers, particularly pilgrims visiting Iranโs religious cities of Qom and Mashhad. The suspension could also impact Indians using Iran as a transit hub to reach Europe, Central Asia, or holy sites in Iraq.
While the Iranian foreign ministry has not officially explained the decision, Indian sources report that recent incidents involving fake job offers and unauthorized travel may have prompted the suspension. Some individuals were reportedly lured to Iran before being sent to third countries under false pretenses.
Travel agencies and tourists have expressed concern over the sudden change, warning that it may disrupt planned trips and affect pilgrimage tourism. Authorities have urged Indian travelers to apply for visas well in advance to avoid complications.
The suspension of visa-free entry marks a significant shift in Iranโs travel policy toward Indian nationals, emphasizing stricter entry controls and a focus on security measures.
Travelers are advised to check with the Iranian embassy in New Delhi for the latest visa requirements and guidelines before planning any trips.
