Israeli forces carried out multiple airstrikes on Gaza and Lebanon on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of 25 Palestinians in Gaza, health authorities confirmed. The attacks occurred despite a shaky ceasefire that took effect in October.
Medics reported that ten people were killed in the Gaza City suburb of Zeitoun, two in Shejaia to the east, and the remaining 13 in two separate strikes in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Many of the targets included buildings housing displaced families, such as a U.N.-run club in Khan Younis and a building managed by Muslim religious authorities in Zeitoun.
The Israeli military said the strikes targeted Hamas sites after members of the group allegedly fired on Israeli troops, violating the nearly six-week-old truce. No Israeli soldiers were reported injured.
The incident underscores the fragility of the ceasefire, with both Israel and Hamas blaming each other for violations. Health officials noted that these attacks crossed the so-called โyellow lineโ separating Israeli-controlled and Palestinian-controlled areas, highlighting the escalating risks for civilians.
Since the October 10 truce, Israeli strikes have reportedly killed over 300 Palestinians, with nearly half occurring in one day last week. The ceasefire had allowed hundreds of thousands of residents to return to Gaza, while Israel withdrew troops from city positions and humanitarian aid increased. However, the resumption of attacks has reignited fears of broader conflict.
In southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes also intensified on Wednesday, killing at least one person. The military targeted Hezbollah-linked infrastructure in villages including Deir Kifa, Chehour, Aainata, and Tayr Filsay, warning residents via social media to evacuate before strikes. Thick smoke was seen rising from the targeted areas.
Lebanese health authorities confirmed the death in Al-Tiri village, emphasizing the continuing threat of Israeli operations near the border. The latest violence highlights growing regional tensions as Israel attempts to prevent a military resurgence by Hezbollah.
The deadly escalation comes as international observers call for restraint and a return to diplomatic measures, warning that ongoing strikes could kill 25 or more civilians in future attacks if tensions remain unchecked.
