Israelโs top military official, the Israeli army chief, has dismissed several senior officers and reprimanded others over failures during the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack. The surprise assault targeted southern Israel from Gaza, resulting in significant casualties and hostages.
The military announced that some officers would be released from reserve duty and would no longer serve. Others received formal reprimands, and one officer resigned. The dismissed personnel included former heads of intelligence, operations, and southern command, who had previously left active service but remained on reserve duty.
โThe IDF failed in its primary mission on October 7 โ to protect civilians of the State of Israel,โ said Eyal Zamir, the Israeli army chief. He described the failures as โsevere, systemic, and related to decisions and conduct before and during the attack.โ Zamir emphasized that the lessons from that day must guide the militaryโs future actions.
The disciplinary actions follow growing public pressure for accountability over the October 7 attack. Thousands protested in Tel Aviv, joined by opposition leaders, demanding a state commission of inquiry. Despite this, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuโs government has yet to initiate a national investigation.
The attack killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and left around 250 people hostage. It also prompted Israelโs extensive military response in Gaza, where over 69,000 people have died according to local health authorities. Israel and Hamas reached a US-brokered ceasefire last month as part of an initial plan to end the conflict.
Analysts note that the steps taken by the Israeli army chief reflect efforts to strengthen accountability within the Israel Defense Forces. The dismissals and reprimands aim to prevent similar failures in the future and restore public confidence in military leadership.
