'It Will Be a Disgrace': Pope Francis Criticizes Trump’s Plans for Mass Deportation Raids

Pope Francis has sharply criticized US President-elect Donald Trump’s proposal for mass deportations, calling it a “disgrace” and a harmful solution to the immigration issue.

In an interview on the Italian talk show Che Tempo Che Fa, the Pope condemned the idea, stating, “If true, this will be a disgrace, as it makes the poor pay the price for the problem. This is not the way to resolve things.”

Trump, set to be inaugurated, has made mass deportations a central focus of his campaign and plans to introduce executive orders on immigration reform immediately upon taking office. The Pope, who has long championed the rights of migrants, believes such actions would be deeply unjust, drawing from his own family’s immigrant history.

This criticism is not the first time Francis has confronted Trump on immigration. During Trump’s 2016 campaign, he criticized the proposed border wall, stating, “Anyone who builds a wall to keep out migrants is not Christian.” Several US bishops, including Cardinal Robert McElroy and Cardinal Blase Cupich, have also voiced opposition to the deportation plans, insisting that such policies conflict with Catholic teachings on welcoming the stranger.

Pope Francis has consistently emphasized the importance of defending human dignity and advocating for migrants, a central theme of his papacy. As Trump’s policies move forward, the debate over immigration remains a significant and divisive issue.
