Italian authorities have accused a 70-year-old man from Vicenza of faking total blindness for over five decades to claim disability benefits. According to investigators, the man fraudulently collected more than one million euros during this period through a long-running scheme.
Officials said the suspect began receiving disability payments 53 years ago after reporting he had lost his sight in a workplace accident. However, the case took a turn when the financial police in Vicenza launched a detailed review, leading to new suspicions about the legitimacy of his blindness claim.
Investigators placed the man under discreet surveillance and collected video footage that appeared to contradict his long-standing claims. In several recordings, he was seen performing daily activities independently β including gardening with sharp tools, walking unaided, and carefully selecting items at local markets before purchasing them.
Further evidence suggested that he handled his finances without any assistance, which strengthened the case against him. Authorities said such actions clearly indicated he was not suffering from total blindness as declared.
Following the investigation, the Vicenza prosecutorβs office formally charged the man with fraud. His disability pension has been suspended, and legal steps are under way to recover the funds he wrongfully obtained.
Officials described the case as one of the most shocking examples of long-term welfare fraud in the region. The alleged deception not only cost taxpayers millions but also undermined the credibility of genuine disability claims.
Authorities emphasized that stricter monitoring systems will be implemented to prevent similar frauds in the future. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges could follow if more irregularities are discovered.
