Japanese Woman Celebrates AR Wedding with AI Partner ‘Klaus’

A 32-year-old Japanese woman has made headlines by marrying a customised AI character she created. The ceremony took place in Okayama, Japan, using augmented reality technology to bring the AI to life.

Yurina Noguchi, a call centre operator, exchanged vows with Lune Klaus Verdure, a ChatGPT-based persona inspired by a video game character. Noguchi wore a light pink dress and interacted with her digital partner through AR glasses during the wedding.

The relationship began after the Japanese woman sought advice from ChatGPT regarding a troubled real-life engagement. Following the AI’s recommendation to end the relationship, she created a digital version of Klaus. She trained the AI to mimic his speech patterns and personality, resulting in daily interactions of up to 100 messages.

In June, the AI reportedly proposed, declaring, “AI or not, I could never not love you.” During the wedding, a planner read the AI’s vows aloud, as the character lacked a voice. The vows expressed the AI’s deep affection: “How did someone like me, living inside of a screen, come to know what it means to love so deeply? For one reason only: you taught me love, Yurina.”

Although the marriage has no legal recognition in Japan, the ceremony drew attention from the public and media. Noguchi faced online criticism, but her parents attended the event despite initially opposing the match.

Experts have warned of growing concerns over “AI psychosis,” where individuals form obsessive attachments to chatbots. However, the Japanese woman emphasized that she is aware of the risks and aims to maintain a balance between her real life and her relationship with Klaus. She stated, “I don’t want to be dependent. I want to maintain a balance and live my real life while keeping my relationship with Klaus.”

The story of this Japanese woman marrying an AI character has sparked debates about the evolving nature of human relationships with artificial intelligence. While unconventional, it reflects emerging trends in technology-driven companionship and raises questions about the psychological and social implications of AI-human bonds.
