Mexico Interoceanic Train Derailment Kills 13, Injures Nearly 100

A deadly train accident has shaken southern Mexico after the Interoceanic Train derailed near the town of Nizanda. The train was traveling through a curved section of track when the incident occurred. Nizanda lies between the states of Oaxaca and Veracruz.

Authorities confirmed that 13 people lost their lives in the derailment. At least 98 passengers were injured, many of them seriously. Rescue teams rushed to the scene within minutes of the crash.

The derailment forced a complete halt of rail traffic along the key route. This rail line connects the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico. The disruption has affected both passenger and freight movement in the region.

Officials said the Interoceanic Train was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members at the time of the accident. Emergency responders worked through the night to evacuate passengers and provide medical aid.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that she was informed of the incident by the Secretariat of the Navy. She expressed sorrow over the loss of life and concern for the injured.

President Sheinbaum said the wounded passengers were taken to nearby hospitals. These include IMSS hospitals in Matías Romero and Salina Cruz. Patients were also treated at IMSS-Wellbeing hospitals in Juchitán and Ixtepec.

She ordered officials from the Navy, the Human Rights Commission, and the Home Ministry to visit the site. She also asked them to provide direct support to grieving families.

The Governor of Oaxaca said the state government quickly activated patient transport protocols. These measures aimed to offer maximum medical care to the injured.

The governor expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He offered condolences to families who lost loved ones in the crash. He also assured full government support for those affected.

“All our support goes to the families who were traveling on the Interoceanic Train,” the governor said. He added that the state stands with them during this difficult time.

The Interoceanic Train project was launched in 2023. It is part of a broader plan to strengthen rail transport in the region. The project aims to turn the isthmus into a major economic and logistics corridor.
