India’s aviation sector is facing major disruption as flight cancellations continue. Modi govt warns IndiGo as flight cancellations surge, demanding swift action to protect passengers and restore normal services. Thousands of travellers have been affected by repeated schedule changes and cancellations across the country.
IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, has cancelled hundreds of flights due to operational challenges linked to new pilot duty regulations. The airline has struggled to comply with rules requiring longer rest periods and limited night landings. This has reduced pilot availability and affected crew planning.
In response, Modi govt warns IndiGo as flight cancellations surge and issued strict directives to the airline. Officials capped domestic airfares on all routes to prevent excessive ticket prices. The government also ordered immediate refunds for passengers whose flights were cancelled.
The Civil Aviation Ministry demanded that IndiGo complete refunds by a specified deadline. Airlines were told not to charge extra for rebooking and to ensure baggage is returned quickly. Special support cells must be set up to help affected travellers.
Officials also warned that any failure to follow these orders could result in penalties. Senior airline executives have been summoned to explain the ongoing disruptions. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued show-cause notices to IndiGo’s leadership.
Passengers at major airports reported long queues, confusion, and delays. In some cities, rental transport prices rose sharply as travellers scrambled for alternatives. Indian Railways and IRCTC set up help desks and special trains to assist stranded passengers.
Government sources said fare caps range from ₹7,500 to ₹18,000, depending on flight distance, to curb opportunistic pricing. These caps apply to all ticket sales, including online booking platforms.
IndiGo has said it is working to stabilise its schedule. The airline reported progress, with network connectivity improving and flights operating to most destinations. It expects normal services to return in the coming days.
Despite this, industry and political voices have called for broader solutions. Some critics argue that over-dependence on one airline makes the aviation system vulnerable. They urge long-term reforms to prevent similar crises in the future.
The government maintains its priority is passenger safety and fairness. Authorities said they will continue strict monitoring and ensure IndiGo meets all regulatory orders. This comes as travellers prepare for peak holiday travel in the coming weeks.
