National CERT Issues Cyber Alert Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Pakistan’s National Cyber Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued a nationwide cyber security advisory. The alert urges institutions to increase digital security as regional tensions continue to rise.

According to the advisory, the National CERT warned that geopolitical instability could lead to a rise in cyberattacks. These attacks may involve state-sponsored hackers, organized cybercrime groups, and online activists.

Officials said the warning is aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure. Important sectors such as defence, finance, and government services could become targets of advanced cyber operations.

The CERT advisory explained that attackers may use various tactics. These include spear-phishing emails, advanced malware, and deepfake technology used for spreading misinformation.

Authorities also warned about advanced persistent threats. These are long-term cyber operations designed to steal sensitive information or disrupt essential services.

The advisory said cyberattacks could lead to serious consequences. These include account takeovers, data theft, and unauthorized control of official systems.

Hackers may attempt to hijack government websites or official social media accounts. Such actions could spread false information and create public confusion.

The National CERT also highlighted the risk of service disruptions. Energy, transport, and telecommunications networks could face outages if targeted by cyber operations.

Another concern mentioned in the advisory is the possibility of data breaches. Government databases and sensitive information systems could be targeted by hackers.

The alert also warned about distributed denial-of-service attacks, commonly known as DDoS attacks. These attacks can overwhelm online platforms and make services temporarily unavailable.

The CERT advisory also mentioned spyware risks. Malicious software could be hidden inside news or financial applications used by the public.

To reduce these risks, the National CERT has issued several security recommendations. Institutions have been instructed to perform immediate cyber security audits.

Organizations should adopt multi-factor authentication and stronger login systems. The advisory also recommends replacing SMS-based verification with safer alternatives.

Officials also suggested using zero-trust security models. This approach requires strict verification for every user accessing sensitive systems.

The CERT guidance further advises updating VPNs, firewalls, and operating systems regularly. Security patches should be applied quickly to reduce vulnerabilities.

Organizations should also restrict foreign IP access to sensitive networks. Monitoring unusual login attempts can help detect potential cyber threats early.

Additional measures include strengthening data encryption and verifying the security practices of third-party vendors.

The National CERT emphasized that proactive cyber defence is essential in the current environment. Authorities urged institutions and the public to remain alert and avoid sharing unverified information online.
