KATHMANDU: Nepal is facing a major climate crisis after a devastating glacial collapse struck the China-Nepal border.
The disaster occurred on August 26 and caused a massive flow of ice, rocks, and debris. The powerful wave destroyed villages, roads, bridges, and hydropower facilities.
Pemba Chhring Tamang, a 57-year-old resident of Rasuwa district, survived the disaster. He said the flood was unlike anything he had witnessed before.
Tamang was rescued from his Himalayan village after the disaster. He said homes and much of the village were destroyed.
The catastrophe affected areas in Nepal and China’s Tibet region. More than 1,200 people were reported dead, while over 4,750 remained missing.
Rescue teams continued searching for survivors and victims. Helicopters also delivered food and medical supplies to affected communities.
The exact cause of the glacial collapse remains unclear. However, scientists warn that climate change is increasing risks across the Himalayan region.
Glaciers are melting worldwide as temperatures rise. This process can increase the possibility of dangerous floods and other mountain disasters.
Nepal has contributed relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions. Yet the country remains highly exposed to climate-related disasters.

Himalayan Region Facing Growing Risks
Scientists say climate change is already changing disaster risks in the Himalayas. Experts at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development highlighted the growing danger.
Disaster specialist Saswata Sanyal said the region is warming at roughly twice the global rate. He also warned about cascading disasters.
One event can trigger several other hazards in vulnerable mountain areas. The August 26 disaster demonstrated how quickly such events can spread.
Nepal Calls for Climate Justice
Nepal’s leaders have called for long-term international support. They say assistance should help communities adapt to changing mountain conditions.
Prime Minister Balendra Shah urged the country to raise climate-related disasters with the international community.
Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal described the disaster as a warning signal. He said support should focus on climate justice, not charity alone.
A United Nations assessment estimated flood-related building damage at $158 million. Total losses are expected to be much higher.
The broader costs include damaged roads, bridges, farmland, and humanitarian needs. The UN launched a loss and damage fund in 2025.
However, the fund has limited resources and has not started distributing money.
Risks Extend Across South Asia
The Himalayan glaciers provide water to millions of people. Around 240 million people live in mountain areas across the region.
Another 1.65 billion people depend on water flowing downstream across South and Southeast Asia.
Experts warn that climate change could increase similar hazards in the future. They say the consequences could extend beyond national borders.
Foreign Minister Khanal stressed the need for stronger regional data-sharing systems. Such systems could help authorities provide earlier warnings about future disasters.
The disaster in Nepal has therefore raised concerns across South Asia. Experts say mountain disasters can affect rivers, ecosystems, communities, and livelihoods far away.
For residents like Tamang, however, the impact is already devastating. Their homes, communities, and livelihoods have been severely affected.
