The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to combating extremism after the United States, under former President Donald Trumpโs directive, added Nigeria to a religious freedom watch list.
Officials from the Ministry of Information and National Orientation stated that Nigeria remains dedicated to promoting peace, unity, and tolerance among its diverse population. The government emphasized that it does not tolerate any form of religious persecution or extremism.
The U.S. decision to place Nigeria on the special watch list was based on reports of violence and discrimination involving religious groups. However, Nigerian authorities argue that such incidents are rooted in local conflicts, not state-backed religious bias.
Nigeriaโs Minister of Foreign Affairs said the country would continue engaging with international partners to correct misconceptions and highlight the governmentโs ongoing counterterrorism efforts.
He noted that Nigeriaโs security forces have made significant progress in reducing extremist attacks, particularly in the northeastern regions affected by Boko Haram and ISWAP militants.
Human rights groups and religious organizations welcomed the governmentโs pledge but urged stronger enforcement of laws protecting minority communities.
Nigeriaโs leadership reiterated that it would strengthen interfaith dialogue and national unity while addressing socio-economic factors that contribute to extremism.
