North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test-launch of 12 600mm-calibre multiple rocket launchers on Saturday, state media KCNA reported. The launch comes amid ongoing joint military drills by the United States and South Korea in the region.
KCNA said Kim Jong Un aimed for the test-launch to demonstrate the countryโs military strength and warn โenemies within the 420-km striking range.โ The report also highlighted the destructive power of North Koreaโs tactical nuclear weapons.
Images from KCNA showed Kim watching the test-launch alongside his daughter, Kim Ju Ae, who is considered a potential successor. The rockets reportedly hit island targets in the East Sea of Korea, about 364.4 kilometers away, with 100 percent accuracy.
South Koreaโs military confirmed that North Korea fired more than 10 ballistic missiles from an area near Pyongyang. The missiles traveled roughly 350 kilometers toward the sea off South Koreaโs east coast, the military said.
The test-launch follows remarks by Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un, criticizing US-South Korea drills as a โprovocative and aggressive war rehearsal.โ South Korea and the United States have said the drills are defensive and designed to maintain readiness against potential North Korean threats.
North Korea has said it will continue conducting such exercises regularly to test its war deterrence. Over the past two decades, the country has test-launched various ballistic and cruise missiles, aiming to develop reliable nuclear delivery systems.
Despite multiple UN Security Council sanctions imposed since 2006, Pyongyang remains defiant. These measures have targeted trade, the economy, and defense, yet North Korea continues its missile and weapons programs.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue. South Koreaโs Prime Minister Kim Min-seok met US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss reopening dialogue with North Korea. Trump has expressed interest in meeting Kim Jong Un if opportunities arise.
The recent test-launch has drawn attention worldwide, highlighting tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Analysts say continued missile tests could affect regional security and global markets.
North Koreaโs commitment to weapons development shows its focus on strengthening military capabilities despite international pressure and sanctions.
