A roof collapsed at Delhi airport due to heavy rain, resulting in one fatality and injuring four others. Videos circulating online depict large pillars from the roof crashing into parked cars at Terminal 1 of the airport.
Flights from the terminal have been halted temporarily, with check-in counters closed. The incident occurred at 05:00 local time (23:30 GMT Thursday), according to authorities. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the injured are receiving medical treatment at hospitals.

India’s aviation regulator has advised airlines to rebook passengers on other flights or provide refunds. The incident has disrupted travel for many, as Terminal 1 handles most domestic flights. Some airlines have moved operations to the remaining terminals at the airport.
Federal Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu announced compensation of 2 million rupees for the family of the deceased and 300,000 rupees for the injured. He assured reporters that the situation was under control and inspections were ongoing to prevent future incidents, including at other airports with similar structures nationwide.
Criticism on social media highlighted the recent extensive renovation of the terminal, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March, just before the general election. However, Kinjarapu clarified that the collapsed section was part of an older building opened in 2009, separate from the renovated area inaugurated by the Prime Minister.
Heavy rainfall has drenched Delhi since Thursday, bringing relief from the intense heat the city endured since April. However, the deluge has caused chaos, with many roads flooded and resulting in severe traffic jams.
Commuters faced extended travel times, with some experiencing vehicle breakdowns. Videos circulating on social media depicted people navigating knee-deep water and partially submerged vehicles in subways.
The torrential downpour also disrupted flight schedules, leading to delays and cancellations. The Indian meteorological department predicts continued “heavy to very heavy rainfall” throughout the weekend in the capital.
