Pakistanโs Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, has called for calm amid rising tensions in Yemen, emphasizing dialogue over conflict.
In a phone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud on Saturday, Ishaq Dar urged all regional stakeholders to avoid any escalatory measures. According to a Foreign Office statement, he highlighted the importance of resolving disputes through diplomacy for the sake of regional peace and stability.
The discussion focused on recent developments in Yemen, where southern factions, including the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), are pushing for independence. Saudi Arabia has called for a comprehensive conference in Riyadh to bring all southern factions together to address the so-called โsouthern cause.โ
Ishaq Dar reiterated Pakistanโs full support for diplomatic efforts led by Saudi Arabia and commended the United Arab Emirates for its role in stabilizing the region. He emphasized that all parties must uphold Yemenโs unity and territorial integrity and avoid unilateral actions that could worsen the conflict.
Earlier, the Foreign Office had stated that Pakistan was closely monitoring the situation in Yemen and stressed the need for peaceful negotiations. โPakistan hopes Yemeni stakeholders will work toward solutions that prevent further escalation,โ the spokesperson said.
The STCโs independence bid follows deadly airstrikes in southern Yemen, which have raised fears of a divided nation. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have long supported different factions within Yemenโs government-held areas, influencing the countryโs long-running civil war.
By advocating restraint and dialogue, Ishaq Dar reinforced Pakistanโs position as a supporter of peaceful resolution and regional stability. Analysts say Pakistanโs stance aligns with broader Gulf-led efforts to mediate tensions and prevent further conflict escalation in the Arabian Peninsula.
