India Allows These Pakistani Flights to Use its Airspace Amid Tensions

NEW DELHI โ€“ India has allowed some Pakistani flights to use its airspace to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka following Cyclone Detwah. The cyclone caused widespread devastation, leaving dozens dead, hundreds injured, and millions homeless.

The approval came after Pakistan faced delays in sending over 100 tons of relief supplies. The Pakistani rescue teams, along with essential aid, had been held up due to Indiaโ€™s initial refusal. Pakistan strongly criticized the delay, calling it โ€œagainst moral obligationsโ€ and a threat to thousands of lives in affected coastal regions.

The decision marks a temporary easing of tensions, as both countries had previously imposed bans on each otherโ€™s aircraft following clashes in May. Despite the long-standing diplomatic standoff, India permitted special humanitarian flights, allowing Pakistani flights to reach Sri Lanka and assist cyclone victims.

Pakistanโ€™s naval ship PNS Saif, already in Colombo for the International Fleet Review 2025, joined immediate relief efforts. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir directed all agencies to ensure swift delivery of aid. Their instructions emphasized that no effort should be spared in supporting those affected by the disaster.

Relief operations in Sri Lanka have been intensified, with more than 218,000 people moved to temporary shelters. Emergency medical assistance, food, and clean water are being provided to the affected population. Thailand has also offered support, sending emergency aid and financial assistance to help with the recovery.

The use of Indian airspace for Pakistani flights demonstrates the crucial role of cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises. Authorities hope that these relief efforts reach the most affected areas quickly and prevent further suffering.

While the diplomatic dispute between Islamabad and New Delhi continues, both nationsโ€™ temporary collaboration highlights the importance of prioritizing human lives during natural disasters. The timely deployment of aid could save thousands of people and help Sri Lanka recover from the destruction caused by Cyclone Detwah.
