PARIS โ French authorities successfully stopped a Paris bomb attack early Saturday outside a Bank of America building in the cityโs 8th arrondissement. Police arrested a suspect before he could ignite a homemade explosive device, officials said.
The incident occurred around 3:30 am local time, near the Champs-Elysees. Officers intervened as the suspect placed a device containing five litres of fuel and an ignition system. The explosive component reportedly held 650 grams of powder. Authorities immediately transported the device to a forensic lab for analysis.
Franceโs counter-terrorism prosecutor confirmed the investigation involves โattempted damage by fire or other dangerous means in connection with a terrorist undertakingโ and a โterrorist criminal conspiracy.โ The Paris judicial police and the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) are assisting with the probe.
Police said the suspect claimed to be both a minor and a Senegalese citizen. A second person accompanying him fled the scene. According to sources, the suspect was allegedly recruited through Snapchat to carry out the Paris bomb plot for 600 euros ($692).
The suspect was about to ignite the device with a lighter when police intervened. Authorities noted the accomplice may have tried to film the incident with a mobile phone. Bank of America confirmed awareness of the situation and cooperation with French officials.
Franceโs Interior Minister, Laurent Nunez, praised the rapid police response on X, stressing that vigilance remains critical โgiven the current international situation.โ Officials noted that European countries are on high alert for threats targeting US and Israeli interests amid Middle East tensions.
Sources close to the investigation said the foiled Paris bomb attempt may reflect potential Iranian-linked threats against American and Israeli targets in Europe. Authorities are continuing the investigation to identify any further accomplices or wider networks involved.
