Pentagon Signs AI Deals With Major Tech Firms to Boost Military Capabilities

WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has announced new agreements with seven leading artificial intelligence companies. The move aims to strengthen AI use across the United States military.

According to officials, the Pentagon will deploy advanced AI tools on classified defense networks. These systems will support sensitive military operations and improve decision-making speed.

The companies involved include SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Reflection AI. Several of these firms already work with the Pentagon in different defense projects.

Officials said the integration will expand AI access across secret and top-secret environments. The Pentagon believes this will improve planning, logistics, and operational efficiency in the armed forces.

However, one major company is not included in the new agreements. Anthropic has been excluded due to ongoing disputes over military use policies. Earlier this year, the Pentagon labeled it a supply-chain risk and restricted its systems.

The Defense Department said it wants to avoid overdependence on a single provider. The Pentagon described this strategy as necessary to prevent โ€œvendor lockโ€ in critical technology systems.

Officials also highlighted the rapid pace of AI integration. They said onboarding time for new companies has dropped significantly. The process that once took over a year now takes less than three months.

AI tools are increasingly used by military personnel for multiple tasks. These include mission planning, intelligence analysis, and logistical support. The Pentagon said over 1.3 million personnel are already using its GenAI.mil platform.

Industry experts believe this shift shows growing reliance on AI in defense systems. The Pentagon is also working to ensure secure use of these technologies across classified networks.

Some companies have already secured additional deals. Google recently signed an agreement allowing its AI models to be used for classified work within the Pentagon system.

Despite tensions with Anthropic, officials noted that its technology is still under review. The Pentagon has not ruled out future collaboration if security concerns are addressed.

Defense officials said AI will play a key role in modern warfare and cybersecurity. The Pentagon continues to expand partnerships as part of its long-term modernization strategy.

The announcement reflects a broader effort to integrate advanced technology into national defense operations while maintaining security and reliability.
