Australian PM Anthony Albanese has praised Ahmed al-Ahmed for his bravery during the recent Sydney attack, calling him a hero. The attack, confirmed by the Australian PM to be inspired by ISIS, highlighted the global threat of terrorism.
Speaking at a press conference, the Australian PM said evidence shows the attacker was influenced by ISIS ideology, including flags found in the vehicle. He emphasized that the threat is not only local but part of a worldwide challenge. “This issue has become a challenge not only here but all over the world,” Albanese said.
During the incident, 44-year-old Ahmed risked his life to confront and disarm one of the attackers, saving multiple lives. He was injured during the confrontation and is recovering in hospital under medical care.
The Australian PM visited Ahmed in hospital on Tuesday, spending nearly 30 minutes thanking him personally. “You are so strong. Your courage is inspiring. It was an honour to meet Ahmed. He is a true Australian hero,” Albanese said. Ahmed, despite his injuries, remained humble and focused on his recovery. Doctors confirmed he will undergo further surgery.
Albanese described how Ahmed’s ordinary evening—going out for a cup of coffee—turned extraordinary when he encountered the attackers. “He decided to take action and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians,” the prime minister said.
The Australian PM also met Ahmed’s parents, who traveled from Syria, and praised the family for representing the country’s values. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and former PM John Howard also lauded Ahmed’s courage, highlighting it as one of the most heroic acts seen in Australia.
Albanese reaffirmed national unity, stressing that terrorism will not divide the country. “We are a brave nation. Ahmed represents the best values of our country, and we will not allow this country to be divided,” the Australian PM said, emphasizing resilience and shared values.
