Widespread protests held in Australia to support Palestinians

On August 24, 2025, widespread protests held in Australia to support Palestinians took place across more than 40 cities. Organisers say around 350,000 people attended nationally, while police estimates were notably lower.

Major rallies occurred in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Hobart. In Brisbane, organisers claimed 50,000 attended, but police reported closer to 10,000.

Protesters demanded an end to the violence in Gaza. They also urged the Australian government to sanction Israel and halt arms exports.Local authorities and Jewish groups expressed concern. One Jewish leader said the protests created β€œan unsafe environment.”

In Hobart, a large demonstration marched from Elizabeth Street to Franklin Square. Speakers included Indigenous activists and Palestinian advocates. They drew parallels between Palestinian suffering and Indigenous Australian struggles.

In Adelaide, the biggest pro-Palestine demonstration in the state’s history took place. Thousands gathered at Victoria Square and marched to Parliament House. Chanting slogans like β€œFree, free Palestine” and β€œSanctions now,” they appealed to national leaders for stronger action.

Nationally, the protests were largely peaceful. In Brisbane, a court order rerouted the protest away from the Story Bridge, and organisers complied. The event was described as historic and orderly.

This wave of demonstrations follows Australia’s recent decision to recognize a Palestinian stateβ€”a move that has strained ties with Israel and sparked broader debate.
