Jake Lang, a far-right Republican Senate candidate and supporter of former US President Donald Trump, attempted to burn a copy of the Holy Quran during an anti-Islam rally in Dearborn, a city with a significant Muslim-American population.
A Muslim man intervened to stop Lang from burning the holy book, preventing a potentially dangerous escalation. Video footage shared on social media by journalist Brendan Gutenschwager shows Lang holding a canister of lighter fluid and throwing the Quran to the ground. A counter-protester grabbed the book before it could be set on fire.
The man firmly told Lang, โDon’t burn it, man. You can’t burn it,โ in an effort to protect the sacred text. Despite this, Lang reportedly remained defiant and stated that he had another copy of the Quran. He later slammed a package of bacon on the holy book, prompting further warnings from the Muslim man to show respect.
The situation escalated into a physical confrontation, with multiple individuals trying to take the Quran from Lang. Eventually, someone carried the book away from the scene to prevent further conflict.
Lang has a history of Islamophobic actions and controversial behavior. He was pardoned by former President Trump for his involvement in the storming of the US Capitol in 2021. His actions at the anti-Islam rally sparked widespread criticism on social media and drew condemnation from local community leaders.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions around religious intolerance in the United States. Authorities in Dearborn continue to monitor such events to ensure the safety of residents and prevent violence during public demonstrations.
