Gaza City, February 18, 2026 – Residents of Gaza welcomed Ramadan with small lanterns and decorations despite widespread destruction from past conflicts. This marks the first Ramadan since the October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
In the Omari mosque, worshippers performed the first morning prayer, braving cold weather and damaged surroundings. Abu Adam, a local resident, said, “Despite the destruction of mosques and homes, we came to pray. Even after last night’s shelling, our determination remains strong.”
A security source reported that artillery shelling targeted eastern Gaza City and a central refugee camp that morning. Restrictions on media access prevent independent verification of casualties.
Tens of thousands of people in southern Gaza still live in tents, awaiting reconstruction. Nivin Ahmed, a resident of Al-Mawasi, described a “stifled joy,” saying families miss loved ones lost or displaced during the conflict. Many cannot prepare full Iftar or Suhoor meals due to high food prices and shortages.
Humanitarian aid remains essential in Gaza, where the economy and infrastructure are heavily damaged. With all borders controlled by Israel, essential goods are insufficient, leaving residents partially dependent on aid for daily needs, according to UN reports.
Despite the hardships, Gaza families find moments of hope and unity. Maha Fathi, displaced from Gaza City, said, “Ramadan is still special. People share joy and empathize with each other again after the war.” Local artists also contributed, like Yazeed Abu Jarad, who wrote “Welcome Ramadan” in the sand for children in tent camps.
Mohammed al-Madhoun, another resident, expressed hope for a better future, saying, “I hope this is the last Ramadan we spend in tents. We try to find joy despite everything.”
