Saudi Arabia Advises Physical Distancing for Umrah Pilgrims

Saudi authorities are advising Muslims undertaking Umrah to maintain physical distancing and avoid crowding at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. The Ministry of Hajj highlighted that these measures are essential for reducing the spread of contagious diseases and preventing respiratory infections. They emphasized that avoiding jostling ensures a safer pilgrimage experience.

In a statement on X, the ministry reiterated the importance of wearing facemasks in both the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina to guard against viral and respiratory illnesses. Additionally, pilgrims are encouraged to stay hydrated, particularly during hot weather, by drinking ample water.

The ongoing Umrah season, which started in late June following the annual Hajj pilgrimage, has seen approximately 1.8 million Muslims participating. Last year, around 13.5 million performed Umrah, with plans to accommodate 15 million pilgrims in the upcoming year.

Saudi Arabia has implemented several new measures to facilitate Umrah, such as extending the Umrah visa from 30 to 90 days and allowing entry through various ports. Women pilgrims no longer need to be accompanied by a male guardian, and those holding different types of visas can now perform Umrah and visit significant religious sites after making e-appointments.
