RIYADH – Saudi Arabia has officially appointed Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Fawzan bin Abdullah Al-Fawzan as the new Grand Mufti of the Kingdom. The appointment was made through a royal decree issued by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, following recommendations from Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
According to official reports, Sheikh Al-Fawzan will also serve as the chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars and the president of the General Presidency of Scholarly Research and Ifta, holding the rank of minister.
The new appointment follows the death of the former Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al-Sheikh. His passing marked the end of a long and respected tenure during which he contributed greatly to Islamic scholarship and guidance in the Kingdom.
In honor of the late Grand Mufti, King Salman ordered funeral prayers in absentia to be held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and across all mosques in Saudi Arabia.
The Royal Court expressed deep sorrow, describing the late scholar as a leading religious authority who devoted his life to serving Islam and Muslims around the world. His vast knowledge, writings, and fatwas had a lasting impact on Islamic jurisprudence and education.
With the appointment of Sheikh Dr. Saleh Al-Fawzan, Saudi Arabia aims to continue its legacy of strong religious leadership and scholarly integrity. The new Grand Mufti is widely respected for his deep knowledge of Islamic law and his decades-long service in the Council of Senior Scholars.
