Saudi Arabia Contributes $500 Million to Support Yemen's Budget Deficit

Saudi Arabia has pledged $500 million to Yemen’s internationally recognized government to cover salaries and other expenses, a Saudi official announced on Friday.

The funding is part of the $1.2 billion package approved last year to support Yemen’s government, which was displaced from the capital, Sanaa, by Iranian-backed Houthi forces in 2014.

Saudi Arabia had already provided $250 million in payments in February and August of last year.

The allocation is intended to address Yemen’s budget deficit, with funds designated for salaries, operational costs, food security, and economic reforms, highlighting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to Yemen’s stability and development.

Despite a UN-mediated ceasefire since April 2022 significantly reducing conflict, Yemen remains unstable. Meanwhile, escalating tensions between the Houthis and Israel, including missile and drone strikes, have led to Israeli air raids and retaliatory actions from the US and UK following Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping in solidarity with Palestinians during the Gaza war.
