Sheikh Hasina Son Claims She will Return to Bangladesh on This Date

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to Bangladesh once the newly formed caretaker government decides to schedule elections, according to her son.

This statement contradicts his earlier remark regarding his mother—Bangladesh’s former prime minister and the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Hasina fled to India on Monday following weeks of violent protests that forced her resignation.

A caretaker government, led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in on Thursday and is responsible for organizing the elections.

Her son stated, “For now, she (Hasina) is in India. She will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government decides to hold an election.”

Hasina’s Awami League party is not included in the interim government, following a student-led uprising against the former prime minister, whose departure came after nationwide violence that resulted in around 300 deaths and thousands of injuries.

She is currently residing in a safe house in the New Delhi area. Indian media has reported that she may seek asylum in Britain, although the British Home Office has not commented.

On Thursday, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar mentioned that he spoke with his British counterpart regarding Bangladesh but did not disclose any details.

Hasina’s son, Joy, indicated that he would consider entering politics if necessary. “I am confident the Awami League will participate in the election and we might even win,” he added.
