A large fire has destroyed more than 170 buildings in a coastal city in southern Japan, authorities reported Wednesday. The blaze, which broke out on Tuesday evening, is still not fully extinguished.
The incident occurred in the Saganoseki district of Oita city, located approximately 770 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Around 175 residents were forced to evacuate and seek shelter at an emergency center after the fire began at roughly 5:40 pm local time.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed that one person remains missing, while investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. Aerial footage showed homes reduced to rubble and thick smoke rising above the hilly district. The flames also spread to nearby forested areas, raising concerns of further damage.
Oita city is known for its fishing harbor and the premium Seki-brand mackerel. The fire’s proximity to the harbor added urgency to firefighting efforts, as officials sought to prevent further destruction to the local economy and homes.
A military firefighting helicopter was deployed at the request of Oita’s prefecture governor. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed the action in a post on X, emphasizing that the government is closely monitoring the situation.
This fire is one of the most significant in recent years in southern Japan, highlighting the risks faced by coastal towns during dry and windy conditions. Authorities have urged residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.
Emergency services are continuing their work to contain the blaze. Officials warned that firefighting efforts could take several more hours, given the size of the fire and the difficult terrain of the affected area.
