A report released on Tuesday by Special Counsel Jack Smith has accused former US President Donald Trump of orchestrating a “criminal effort” to retain power following his 2020 election defeat to President Joe Biden. The investigation revealed that Trump attempted to obstruct the certification of the election results and exert pressure on officials to overturn the outcome.
The report culminated in a four-count indictment against Trump, with evidence suggesting that a conviction could have been secured. However, Smith acknowledged that Trump’s departure from office and the certification of Biden’s victory prevented any legal action from proceeding before Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021.

The investigation highlighted Trump’s efforts to influence state election officials, mobilize supporters to disrupt the certification process, and pressure the Justice Department to support his baseless claims of widespread election fraud. Smith’s findings have drawn sharp criticism from Trump’s supporters, who argue that the probe was politically motivated.
In response to ongoing accusations from Trump and his legal team, Special Counsel Smith dismissed claims of political bias, stating, “The claim from Mr. Trump that my decisions were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors is, in a word, laughable.”
Trump’s legal team has strongly condemned the report, characterizing it as a politically motivated attempt to harm his chances in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The battle over Trump’s role in the 2020 election is set to continue in court, with the indictment likely to spark intense legal challenges.
As the case unfolds, critics warn that Trump’s actions represent a dangerous precedent for future attempts to undermine democracy, while his supporters maintain that he is being unjustly targeted for political reasons.
