The Tamil Nadu government has increased financial support for first-time hajj pilgrims. The subsidy will rise from Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000.
Finance Minister N Marie Wilson announced the decision during his budgetary address on Wednesday. The announcement was made under the Revised Estimates for 2026-27.
The subsidy is provided through the Tamil Nadu State Hajj Committee. The increase aims to offer greater financial assistance to first-time hajj pilgrims from the state.
Wilson said the government remains committed to protecting minority rights. He described the Vijay-led TVK government as a secular and social justice administration.
He also said Tamil Nadu has taken a leading role in supporting minority communities. The government will continue educational scholarships for minority students.
According to the minister, the government will maintain its focus on minority welfare. He said there would be no compromise on protecting minority interests.
The revised budget also includes major funding for backward classes and minority communities. Around Rs 1,700 crore has been allocated for these welfare programs.
The allocation covers backward classes, most backward classes, and minority communities. The funds are intended to support welfare and development initiatives across these groups.
The government has also planned additional Christian and Muslim Women Aid Societies. A total of Rs 105 crore has been allocated for these initiatives.
Another Rs 34 crore will support improvements to graveyards and cemeteries. The funding will help improve infrastructure and facilities at these sites.
The revised estimates also include changes to overseas education support. The Ambedkar Overseas Education Scholarship Scheme has received a significant increase.
The scholarship allocation has been raised from Rs 32 lakh to Rs 131 crore. The revised funding is expected to benefit 362 students.
The government also announced a new initiative for Adi Dravidian and tribal communities. The Successful Entrepreneurs Scheme will focus on improving livelihoods.
The scheme aims to support sustainable economic development among eligible beneficiaries. It will provide both capital and interest subsidies.
The government has allocated Rs 75 crore for the scheme during the current financial year. Beneficiaries will receive support based on their total project costs.
The measures form part of Tamil Nadu’s wider welfare initiatives. They cover minority welfare, education, religious infrastructure, and economic development.
