President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday, calling him βa true American hero.β The ceremony took place in the White House Rose Garden, where Kirkβs widow, Erika Kirk, accepted the award on his behalf.
A military aide introduced Kirk as βa martyr for truth and freedom,β while Trump praised his contributions to conservative activism and his efforts to mobilize young voters. βHe was assassinated in the prime of his life for boldly speaking the truth,β Trump said, referring to Kirkβs recent death during a debate event in Utah.
Erika Kirk, who now serves as CEO of Turning Point USA, thanked the president for honoring her husband. She said the recognition was βa profound and meaningful tributeβ and appreciated Trumpβs return from the Middle East to attend the event.
Several senior officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, attended the ceremony. Media personalities such as Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and Sean Hannity were also present.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the nationβs highest civilian award, given to individuals who make exceptional contributions to the United States or world peace. Trump has awarded the medal to several notable figures, including Babe Ruth, Elvis Presley, and Justice Antonin Scalia.
During his speech, Trump praised Kirkβs dedication to American values and criticized what he called βfar-left radical extremism.β He also credited Kirk with helping him win over young voters during his campaigns.
In an emotional speech, Erika Kirk described her husband as βfearlessβ and driven by faith and service. She said, βTo live free is the greatest gift, but to die free is the greatest victory.β
The ceremony ended with βAmazing Graceβ as Erika Kirk stood holding the Presidential Medal of Freedom, honoring the legacy of Charlie Kirk.
