Trump Imposes New Tariffs, Including 29% on Pakistani Goods

US President Donald Trump announced a sweeping set of new tariffs on Wednesday, targeting multiple countries, including a 29% tariff on Pakistani exports. The decision, part of his administration’s efforts to address trade imbalances, is aimed at countering what he calls unfair treatment of American products in global markets.

Trump justified the move by pointing out that Pakistan has been charging a 58% tariff on American goods, prompting the US to implement a reciprocal measure. The US remains one of Pakistan’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade valued at $7.3 billion in 2024. However, these tariffs could potentially disrupt trade flows between the two nations.

The United States has also imposed tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% on 40 other countries, including China (34%), Vietnam (46%), and Bangladesh (37%). Trump argued that high tariffs imposed by other nations have unfairly supported foreign economies at the expense of American businesses.

Reaffirming his “America First” stance, Trump described trade deficits as a “national emergency” and emphasized that the US would no longer subsidize foreign economies. The impact of these new tariffs on global trade remains uncertain, but experts warn of potential economic ripples across multiple industries.
