US President Donald Trump celebrated what he called a βhistoric victory for peaceβ after Thailand and Cambodia signed an expanded ceasefire agreement on Saturday. The deal, which officially ends years of border tension between the two Southeast Asian neighbors, was announced during Trumpβs five-day visit to Asia.
The signing ceremony brought together Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. Both leaders described the accord as a major step toward lasting stability. The agreement includes terms for disarmament, prisoner releases, and renewed border cooperation β a move widely seen as restoring trust between the two countries.
President Trump praised the peace accord as evidence that the United States is demonstrating leadership again in global diplomacy. βWe stopped the war between Thailand and Cambodia,β he said, adding that 18 Cambodian prisoners of war would be freed as part of the peace process.
The Thai Prime Minister confirmed that his government would begin removing weapons and releasing prisoners in accordance with the new terms. He also highlighted a joint statement on reciprocal trade, aiming to finalize a framework for economic cooperation by the end of the year.
βThis is not just a peace deal; itβs the beginning of shared prosperity,β Anutin said.
Trump described the accord as βa milestone that will save millions of livesβ and reaffirmed Washingtonβs role in promoting regional stability. He said the agreement shows Americaβs ability to lead and build peace through trade and diplomacy β proof, he claimed, that the US is showing leadership again after years of global uncertainty.
During the event, Trump also cited progress in other regions, including the resolution of the PakistanβAfghanistan conflict and peace efforts involving Saudi Arabia. He praised regional leaders for their roles in advancing dialogue and cooperation.
The Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire marks a highlight of Trumpβs first Asia tour since taking office. The White House said the trip demonstrates the administrationβs βrenewed commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.β
As Trump concluded, he emphasized that Americaβs influence abroad has been restored. βToday, the world sees the United States providing leadership again β not through war, but through peace.β
