UAE Court Jails Pakistani Driver for One Year for Sexually Assaulting Passenger

A Pakistani driver has been sentenced to one year in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a female passenger, according to local media reports. The driver, employed by a luxury transport company, was found guilty of the crime, which occurred in April 2024.

The incident took place when a Polish national booked a ride from a hotel in the Business Bay area. Instead of following the designated route, the driver diverted to a remote and poorly lit location, where he carried out the assault.

The victim, who was intoxicated at the time, later stated that the driver stopped the car, led her to an unfamiliar place, and sexually assaulted her.

Although her recollection of the event was fragmented, she managed to reach a nearby building, where she hailed another taxi and returned home. The next morning, as memories of the incident became clearer, she reported the assault to the police. A subsequent forensic examination confirmed her account.

During the investigation, the driver claimed the woman was unable to recall her address and did not have money for the fare. However, forensic evidence supported the victim’s testimony. In court, he denied the charges, arguing that language barriers led to misunderstandings during police questioning due to the lack of a translator.

Despite his defense, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to one year in prison, followed by deportation from the UAE. The case underscores concerns over passenger safety in ride-hailing services and highlights the importance of swift legal action against such crimes.
