Horrific Uganda Bus Crash Leaves 63 Dead – How Did It Happen

At least 63 people have died, and many others were injured in a tragic Uganda bus crash on the busy Kampala-Gulu Highway, police confirmed on Wednesday.

The accident occurred shortly after midnight near Kitaleba village when two buses, traveling in opposite directions, attempted to overtake other vehicles simultaneously. The buses collided head-on, triggering a four-vehicle pile-up that also involved a Toyota car and a Tata lorry.

According to the Uganda Police Force, β€œBoth buses met head-on during the overtaking maneuvers. Sixty-three people lost their lives, all occupants from the involved vehicles.” Emergency responders rushed dozens of injured passengers to Kiryandongo Hospital, many in critical condition. Authorities fear the death toll may rise due to the severity of injuries.

The impact of the Uganda bus crash was severe, leaving the buses mangled and other nearby vehicles overturned as drivers tried to avoid the wreckage. Officials said both buses belonged to long-distance transport companies commonly used in Uganda.

Police have launched an investigation, with initial findings pointing to reckless overtaking as the primary cause. Kananura Michael, director of Traffic and Road Safety, described the crash as a β€œgrim reminder” of the dangers of careless driving on busy highways. He urged motorists to exercise caution, avoid dangerous overtaking, and follow road safety rules.

β€œThis incident highlights the ongoing risks on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, where high-speed crashes and reckless driving are common,” Michael added. He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.

This tragic Uganda bus crash comes weeks after another deadly accident on the same route, where a wandering elephant struck a vehicle, resulting in one death and six injuries. These incidents have raised concerns over both road safety and wildlife hazards in northern Uganda.

Authorities continue to investigate, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on Uganda’s highways.
