UK Recorded a Record Number of Antisemitic Incidents in Early 2024

Britain reported nearly 2,000 Antisemitic Incidents in the first half of 2024, marking a record high for any six-month period, according to the Community Security Trust (CST). The CST, which provides security advice to the UK’s estimated 280,000 Jewish residents, noted that more than half of these incidents were related to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

CST Chief Executive Mark Gardner condemned the rise in antisemitism, emphasizing its prevalence across various areas including schools, workplaces, public transport, and streets.

The number of incidents, totaling 1,978 between January and July, is more than double the number reported during the same period in 2023.

The CST also observed a significant increase in online antisemitic hate and incidents related to schools. This surge follows what the CST reported as the worst year for antisemitism in Britain, attributed to heightened tensions after the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas.

In response to the rising antisemitic attacks, the UK government had previously allocated an additional £3 million ($3.8 million) in funding to support security at Jewish institutions.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the escalating antisemitism, asserting that Britain must combat such hatred decisively and ensure that those spreading it face legal consequences.
