Antรณnio Guterres announced a major humanitarian appeal to help civilians affected by the conflict in Lebanon. The UN chief called for $308.3 million in emergency aid to support hundreds of thousands of displaced people.
The announcement came during the UN chiefโs visit to Beirut on Friday. Guterres said the visit was meant to show solidarity with the Lebanese people during a difficult time. Ongoing Israeli strikes and rocket attacks from Hezbollah have forced large numbers of civilians to flee their homes.
According to the UN chief, around 816,000 people inside Lebanon have been displaced so far. He warned that the number could increase as the fighting continues. The UN chief said the military escalation in the region has caused severe damage and suffering.
Guterres noted that many civilians, including children, have been killed during the violence. Entire communities have also been uprooted. He said daily life in many areas has been deeply disrupted.
Access to food, water, healthcare, and education has been severely affected. Basic services are also under strain as the conflict expands. The UN chief said evacuation orders now cover more areas of the country than before.
The crisis has also pushed thousands of people across the border. More than 90,000 individuals, mostly Syrians but also some Lebanese citizens, have crossed into Syria seeking safety.
The UN chief stressed that urgent funding is needed to respond to the growing humanitarian crisis. He said quick and flexible financial support will help aid organizations reach those in need. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring safe access for humanitarian workers.
Guterres said Lebanon has long supported refugees from other conflicts. For many years, the country opened its doors to people fleeing war. Now, the UN chief said the global community must support Lebanon in return.
The United Nations and its partners are already delivering aid. Relief teams are providing food, clean water, hygiene supplies, and other basic necessities. Schools have also opened their doors to shelter displaced families.
Healthcare workers continue to provide treatment despite limited resources and heavy pressure. The UN chief praised their dedication and courage during the crisis.
The emergency appeal aims to fund humanitarian operations for the next three months. The funds will support essential services, including healthcare, food assistance, education, and protection programs.
Guterres also renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire. The UN chief said ending the fighting is essential for creating conditions for peace talks. He added that the United Nations stands ready to support Lebanonโs government in restoring stability.
