UP Schools Cancel Christmas Holiday – What’s Behind the Decision

LUCKNOW – The Uttar Pradesh government has cancelled the Christmas holiday in schools, directing institutions to hold events celebrating former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday instead.

Under the new directive, both public and private schools will remain open on December 25. Schools have been instructed to organize programmes and activities focused on Vajpayee’s birth anniversary, replacing traditional Christmas holiday celebrations.

The decision comes amid reports of incidents targeting the Christian community in different parts of India during the festive season. Videos circulating on social media show alleged harassment and intimidation during Christmas holiday events. Churches and other religious gatherings have also reportedly faced attacks in some regions.

The move has sparked widespread debate. Opposition parties, including Congress, criticized the Uttar Pradesh government for sidelining a major religious festival. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said religious minorities feel increasingly insecure under the current administration. She also noted that the international community is closely monitoring the situation.

Social media users have expressed mixed reactions. Some argue that schools should honor all cultural and religious occasions, while others support the government’s focus on celebrating national leaders. The cancellation of the Christmas holiday has particularly drawn attention, raising concerns about minority rights and freedom of religious expression.

Religious groups have urged the government to reconsider its directive and allow schools to observe Christmas alongside educational activities. Several local NGOs highlighted that festive events play a key role in fostering community harmony and cultural understanding among students.

So far, the Uttar Pradesh government has not issued further clarification regarding the cancellation of the Christmas holiday. The situation continues to be closely monitored by civil society groups, opposition parties, and religious organizations across India.

Observers say the debate over the Christmas holiday reflects broader concerns about inclusivity, minority rights, and the role of education in promoting respect for diverse cultural traditions in India.
