The United States has officially signed a 10-year defense framework agreement with India, marking a major step in strengthening military and strategic ties between the two countries.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the agreement on Friday, calling it a cornerstone for regional stability and deterrence. He said the pact would enhance coordination, intelligence sharing, and technological cooperation between the US and India.
βOur defense ties have never been stronger,β Hegseth wrote on X after meeting Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defence Ministersβ Meeting-Plus in Kuala Lumpur, which begins tomorrow, according to the Hindustan Times.
Following the signing of the 10-year defense framework agreement with India, Hegseth expressed gratitude to Singh for his leadership and commitment to the long-standing partnership between Washington and New Delhi. He noted that the US-India relationship is built on shared values, mutual trust, and a collective vision for a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Describing the framework as βambitious,β Hegseth said it lays the foundation for deeper collaboration between the two militaries. βIt underscores Americaβs long-term commitment to our shared security and our strong partnership,β he added.
The 10-year defense framework agreement with India is expected to promote joint defense production, advanced technology exchange, and expanded training opportunities. Analysts believe the move will also enhance regional security cooperation amid growing strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific.
This agreement highlights both nationsβ intent to work together on maritime security, defense innovation, and counterterrorism efforts. It reinforces their shared goal of maintaining peace and stability across the region.
With this milestone, the US and India have entered a new phase of defense partnership, one that promises to shape the Indo-Pacificβs strategic landscape for the next decade.
