US Senate Advances Bill to End 40-Day Government Shutdown

The US Senate took a significant step toward ending the longest government shutdown in history with a procedural vote on Sunday. The measure advances a Republican-led stopgap funding plan, providing temporary relief for federal workers and key programs.

In a 60-40 vote, senators approved moving forward with the funding package. The plan will keep parts of the federal government operational, including food assistance programs and the legislative branch, through January 30. Federal employees who had received layoff notices will be reinstated and reimbursed for lost wages.

Eight Democrats broke ranks to support the measure, marking a rare moment of bipartisan cooperation in a politically divided Senate. Democratic senators who voted in favor include Dick Durbin, Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, Tim Kaine, John Fetterman, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Jacky Rosen. Independent Angus King also supported the measure.

Despite the vote, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer opposed the plan, citing the lack of guaranteed Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidy extensions. He emphasized that healthcare remains a top Democratic priority. Republicans have indicated a willingness to negotiate ACA tax credits after government funding is restored, though they propose changes to eligibility and subsidy distribution.

The temporary funding ensures critical programs continue, including veteransโ€™ benefits and food aid. The 40-day shutdown has caused widespread disruption, with airlines reporting over 2,000 canceled flights and 7,000 delays on Sunday alone. Treasury Secretary Sean Duffy warned air travel could be โ€œreduced to a trickleโ€ ahead of Thanksgiving if the closure persisted.

Food assistance programs like SNAP have also been affected, leaving millions without timely support. The Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, D.C., reported a nearly 20 percent increase in meals to support unpaid federal workers and other vulnerable residents.

The US Senate vote offers a temporary solution, giving lawmakers time to negotiate long-term funding and avoid further disruptions before the January 30 deadline.
