US Student Kills 4, Injures 9 in Campus Shooting

A 14-year-old student fatally shot two fellow students and two teachers and injured nine others at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, marking the first mass school shooting of the academic year. The shooter, Colt Gray, who had been investigated for online threats the previous year, was quickly arrested and will be tried as an adult. He was armed with a semiautomatic rifle and surrendered to deputies at the scene. Investigators believe he acted alone but have not disclosed his motive.

The victims were identified as two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, and teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53. All nine wounded individuals are expected to recover. The FBI previously investigated Colt for online threats, but no arrest was made due to a lack of evidence at the time.

The shooting reignited the national debate on gun control, with local residents holding a prayer vigil to honor the victims. Winder’s community expressed solidarity and grief, with city officials calling for unity and support for the affected families.

President Biden condemned the incident, calling for “common-sense gun safety legislation” and urging Republicans to work with Democrats. Vice President Kamala Harris echoed the sentiment, labeling the shooting a “senseless tragedy” and pushing for an end to gun violence. Former President Donald Trump also expressed condolences, calling the shooter a “deranged monster.”

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp refrained from discussing policy, focusing instead on mourning the victims. The shooting adds to the ongoing crisis of gun violence in U.S. schools, with hundreds of such incidents reported over the past two decades.
