At least seven people were killed on Saturday after a passenger bus overturned on a mountain road in Vietnam. The accident happened in Yen Bai province, located in the country’s northern region. State-run media confirmed the tragic incident and shared initial details about the crash.
According to official reports, the bus was carrying 19 passengers at the time of the accident. It was a 29-seat vehicle transporting members of a charity group. The bus was travelling downhill on a steep and winding road when it suddenly overturned. The vehicle flipped and was badly damaged after being crushed during the crash.
Local authorities said the accident occurred in Phinh Ho commune. Emergency services were alerted soon after the bus overturned. Rescue teams rushed to the scene to help passengers trapped inside the wreckage. The difficult terrain and damaged bus structure made rescue work challenging.
Rescue workers managed to pull 10 survivors from the overturned bus. However, several passengers remained trapped inside for hours. As of 10:30 a.m. local time, heavy machinery was still being used to cut through the bus. Officials said the goal was to reach anyone who might still be alive.
Hoang Anh Tuan, chairman of the Phinh Ho commune, spoke to the Vietnam News Agency. He said early signs pointed to brake failure as the likely cause of the crash. The bus was moving downhill when it lost control, which may have led to the deadly overturn.
Police officers, military units, and local officials joined the rescue operation. Residents from nearby areas also helped emergency teams at the site. Authorities worked together to secure the area and manage traffic on the mountain road.
Officials in Vietnam confirmed that an investigation has been launched. The aim is to determine the exact cause of the accident. Technical inspections of the bus and road conditions are part of the inquiry. Calls to local authorities in Yen Bai province were not answered immediately.
