Virginia Woman Pleads Guilty to Brutal Assault of 10-Year-Old Son

In a disturbing case out of Fairfax County, Virginia, China Ashley Charles, 38, has pleaded guilty to federal charges after a violent assault on her 10-year-old son led to his daring escape by jumping from the roof of their home. Charles entered her plea in the US District Court in Alexandria, facing charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, child cruelty, and other related offenses.

The incident occurred on October 8, when Charles flew into a rage after finding her son’s bedroom in disarray. Court documents reveal she used a variety of household objects to strike the boy, including a hot iron, a chair, dresser drawers, and a large spoon. The child attempted to protect himself, even blocking his face from the iron, but sustained serious injuries, including a bleeding finger after being hit with a charging wire.

Charles tried to cover up the assault by forcing her son into a cold bath to minimize the appearance of his injuries, but the boy seized an opportunity to escape. He climbed out of a second-story window and jumped from the roof to flee, where he was later found by police with significant bruises, a head injury, and cuts.

Police recovered multiple blood-stained objects from the home, including the iron and dresser drawers used in the assault. A chilling detail emerged when authorities found clothing marked with the words “I’M ON PUNISHMENT,” revealing the extent of the abuse. The child’s sister reported that the beatings had been ongoing for four years.

Charles now faces up to 16 years in prison, with her sentencing scheduled for May 9. The case has drawn attention to the severity of child abuse and the courage of the young boy in escaping a life-threatening situation.
