Who Was Sarah Beckstrom US National Guard Member Killed in Washington Shooting

A tragic shooting in Washington, DC, has claimed the life of young National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom, sending shockwaves across the nation. The incident happened in broad daylight near Farragut Square, a busy area just a few blocks from the White House.

Authorities confirmed that 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom was fatally shot while on patrol, while her fellow soldier, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition.

The attack took place near 17th and I Streets, where the two soldiers were performing a high-visibility patrol as part of ongoing security operations in the capital. The suspected shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was quickly arrested at the scene. Officials stated that he is an Afghan national who arrived in the United States in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome, a program created to support Afghans who helped U.S. forces during the withdrawal from Kabul.

Early investigations show that Lakanwal previously worked as a GPS tracker with the Kandahar Strike Force, a unit linked to U.S. partner troops and Afghan intelligence. He was shot four times by officers while being taken into custody.

President Donald Trump confirmed the death of Sarah Beckstrom and described her as a โ€œhighly respected, young, magnificent person.โ€ He later spoke with her grieving parents to offer condolences.

Beckstrom joined the West Virginia Army National Guard in June 2023 and was serving with the 863rd Military Police Company. She had volunteered to patrol in Washington during the holiday period, a decision that highlighted her dedication and commitment.

Senator Jim Justice of West Virginia called the incident โ€œabsolutely devastatingโ€ and expressed hope for Wolfeโ€™s recovery. He also extended prayers to Beckstromโ€™s family as they cope with the heartbreaking loss.

The shooting raised renewed concerns about public safety in the capital. More than 2,000 National Guard members have been deployed in Washington since August to respond to rising crime, although they do not have arrest powers and must rely on law enforcement during dangerous encounters.

Following the attack, President Trump ordered a full review of Green Cards issued to immigrants from countries considered high-risk. The administration said the move aims to reinforce national security and prevent similar incidents in the future.
