A deadly drone attack near the Afghan border has intensified regional security concerns, as officials warn that militancy is now spreading beyond Afghanistanโs borders. The assault, which killed three Chinese workers in southern Tajikistan, is being viewed as another serious reminder of the growing Afghan Terror Threat.
According to Tajik authorities, a drone carrying grenades crossed from Afghanistan into Tajik territory and struck a construction site operated by a Chinese company. Gunfire reportedly accompanied the drone strike. The government in Dushanbe issued a rare public statement confirming the deaths, but offered no indication about who might be responsible for planning or supporting the attack.
Following the incident, Pakistanโs Foreign Office strongly condemned the strike. Islamabad called it a โheinous terrorist attackโ and said the use of armed drones showed the expanding risks linked to the Afghan Terror Threat. Pakistan added that the attack reflected the boldness of extremist groups operating from Afghan territory.
Officials in Islamabad stressed that Pakistan understands the grief of China and Tajikistan, noting that Pakistan itself has repeatedly faced attacks โorchestrated from Afghan soil.โ The government reiterated its long-held stance that Afghanistan must not be allowed to serve as a base for terrorism.
Pakistan also warned that the continued presence of militant groups inside Afghanistan poses a serious danger to neighbouring states and the international community. The attack, it said, represents a clear example of how the Afghan Terror Threat is no longer limited by borders.
The Foreign Office demanded โconcrete and verifiable actionโ against the planners, facilitators, and financiers behind such assaults. Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to working with China, Tajikistan, and regional partners to promote security and stability.
This latest incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Islamabad and Kabul over the presence of the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The Afghan Taliban continue to deny claims that militants linked to attacks in Pakistan are receiving sanctuary on Afghan soil.
