Pakistani climber Salman Atique has successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the 14th Pakistani to achieve this milestone. His achievement adds another proud moment to Pakistan’s mountaineering history.
The Islamabad-based mountaineer reached the 8,848-metre peak of Mount Everest at 11:49 a.m. on Thursday. He proudly raised the national flag at the summit, marking a significant personal and national success.
Salman Atique was the only Pakistani climber among hundreds of international permits issued by Nepal this season. His successful climb highlights his growing experience in high-altitude expeditions.
Earlier, he had also scaled Mount Manaslu in Nepal, further strengthening his record as a skilled climber. His latest achievement on Mount Everest places him among the few Pakistani mountaineers who have reached the world’s highest peak.
On the same day, a record number of climbers reportedly reached the summit from the Nepalese side. Officials estimated around 274 ascents in a single day, which may surpass previous records once confirmed.
Authorities noted that the figures are still preliminary. Final numbers will be verified after climbers return and submit required evidence, including photographic proof from Mount Everest.
This year’s climbing season saw 494 permits issued by Nepal. Each permit cost around $15,000, reflecting the growing demand for expeditions to Mount Everest despite the high risks involved.
The large number of climbers has raised safety concerns. Experts have warned about overcrowding in the “death zone,” where oxygen levels are extremely low and delays can be dangerous.
The situation has become more challenging due to route restrictions. China did not issue permits for the Tibetan side this year, forcing climbers to rely on Nepal’s southern route to Mount Everest.
Weather conditions also played a role this season. A delayed spring and unstable ice conditions created a narrow window for safe climbing attempts on Mount Everest.
