Lahore and other parts of Punjab are experiencing dangerous air pollution, placing the region among the most polluted cities in the world, officials said. Winds blowing from India have worsened the situation, making the air extremely unhygienic.
Indian capital New Delhi topped the charts with a hazardous particle reading of 260, ranking second globally. Karachi also appears on the list, holding the sixth position among the most polluted cities worldwide.
Health experts have warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel and use masks to protect against toxic smog. The pollution is particularly harmful to children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues.
Last year, Punjab struggled with similar challenges as winter approached. Smog levels rose sharply, and authorities took emergency steps to contain air pollution. Lahore, in particular, was enveloped by thick smog for several days. The haze was caused by low-grade diesel fumes, seasonal crop burning, and cooling air temperatures, creating a mix of fog and pollutants.
Air pollution in Lahore once reached more than 80 times the level deemed safe by the World Health Organization (WHO). In response, the government closed schools temporarily and limited the operating hours of businesses, markets, and eateries to protect the public from harmful effects.
Experts say industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and cross-border pollution are key factors contributing to the city being among the most polluted cities. They also recommend long-term measures such as stricter emissions control, public awareness campaigns, and reforestation efforts to improve air quality.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to take precautions during periods of severe smog and remain alert as winter deepens.
