The Punjab government has announced a major crackdown on littering, effective from January 1. Authorities say the move aims to improve public health, protect the environment, and maintain clean cities and towns.
Officials confirmed that Punjab cracks down on improper waste disposal with strict punishments. Violators will face heavy fines and imprisonment for burning, dumping, or throwing garbage in public spaces. The crackdown reflects the government’s commitment to tackling environmental pollution seriously.
Under the new rules, burning garbage can result in fines of up to Rs500,000 and up to three years in jail. The penalties are harsher for burning tires, carrying fines of Rs500,000 and jail terms of up to seven years. Throwing garbage outside homes, shops, or factories will result in fines of Rs25,000. Dumping waste into street drains will attract Rs10,000 fines, while animal waste or remains can lead to Rs50,000 fines.
Enforcement teams have been formed across the province to ensure compliance. These teams will monitor streets, neighbourhoods, commercial areas, and industrial zones. Officials said that Punjab cracks down on violators without exceptions, aiming to make the province cleaner and safer.
Authorities stressed that citizens must cooperate and adopt responsible waste disposal practices. Public awareness campaigns are also planned to educate residents on the new rules and environmental benefits.
The provincial government described the initiative as a comprehensive approach to environmental protection. Officials emphasized that the operation will continue beyond January 1, with consistent monitoring and strict enforcement to prevent littering and pollution.
With the new fines and jail terms, Punjab cracks down firmly on activities that harm the environment. Authorities hope the measures will create long-term behavioural change among residents and businesses.
