Muslims across Pakistan are preparing to observe Shab-e-Meraj 2026 following the sighting of the Rajab moon on Sunday. The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting in a meeting chaired by Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabeer Azad.
Zonal and district Ruet-e-Hilal committees also held separate meetings nationwide to verify reports of the moon sighting. The Ministry of Religious Affairs issued a notification confirming the beginning of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar.
Shab-e-Meraj, observed on the 27th night of Rajab, commemorates the sacred journey of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Islamic tradition states that the Prophet was transported from the Holy Kaaba in Makkah to Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem, where he led prayers. He then ascended to the heavens on the celestial mount Al-Buraq and received divine commandments.
The term “Meraj” comes from the Arabic word Urooj, meaning ascension. The event holds great spiritual importance, symbolizing closeness to Allah and spiritual elevation.
Muslims observe Shab-e-Meraj through special prayers, Quran recitation, and voluntary fasting. Many mosques will hold night-long prayers and congregational gatherings to mark the occasion. Families often engage in acts of charity, reflecting on the lessons of the Prophet’s ascension.
According to the official announcement, Shab-e-Meraj will be observed nationwide on the night of January 16, 2026. Religious scholars have urged Muslims to utilize this holy night for reflection, worship, and spiritual growth.
This sacred occasion continues to be a deeply meaningful part of Islamic tradition, reminding believers of faith, devotion, and the importance of following the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
