Hundreds Protest near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday against the recent lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. The demonstration reflects growing tensions between India and its neighbor.
The victim, 27-year-old factory worker Dipu Chandra Das, was beaten and set on fire in Mymensingh district. He was accused by a crowd of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet. At least 10 people have been arrested in connection with his death.
The incident has worsened relations between the two countries weeks before Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. Both nations have suspended visa services. Tensions have lingered since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi following deadly protests last year.
The protest in New Delhi was organized by Hindu groups. Television footage showed demonstrators clashing with police as they tried to push through barricades. Protesters chanted slogans, held posters demanding a “boycott Bangladesh,” and burnt pictures of Yunus.
A protester told India Today, “We needed to raise the voice of Hindus in Bangladesh in Delhi. As long as even one Hindu is harmed, we will not stop.”
Similar demonstrations were reported in other parts of India, including Jammu and Kashmir. Bangladesh summoned the Indian envoy to express concern over violent protests near its mission. The country urged India to investigate these incidents.
India’s foreign ministry stated that a previous protest near the High Commission involved “20-25 youths” who were quickly dispersed by police. Officials reaffirmed India’s commitment to ensuring the safety of foreign missions.
The tensions come amid domestic unrest in Bangladesh. Last week, youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in the head during his parliamentary election campaign. His death sparked widespread protests, arson, and attacks on media and cultural institutions.
Experts say the combination of domestic violence and cross-border demonstrations is putting additional strain on India-Bangladesh relations. Authorities in both countries are monitoring the situation closely.
