New Delhi, India โ Reports of Christmas attacks on Christians in India have drawn international attention, with rights groups warning of increasing threats to religious minorities. Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, general counsel of the pro-Khalistan group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), condemned the attacks, calling them part of a broader pattern under Prime Minister Narendra Modiโs government.
In a video statement, Pannun urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to address the growing risks faced by Indiaโs Christian community. He highlighted cultural, physical, and political dangers that minority groups face, and stressed that only strong international pressure could ensure their protection.
Pannun also announced SFJโs plan for a separate Christian homeland in northeastern India, which he dubbed โTrumpland.โ The proposed region would include Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, and Assam. According to SFJ, this contiguous Christian-majority area could provide a safe refuge for persecuted Christians. A map of the proposed state has been released as part of the organizationโs broader advocacy for self-determination, including its campaign for a Sikh referendum on Khalistan.
India has seen a rise in attacks on Christians in recent years. Reports include assaults on worshippers, vandalism of churches, disruptions of Christmas services, and alleged forced conversions used to justify arrests. Rights groups say these incidents often increase around major Christian holidays, including Christmas, raising concerns about diminishing religious freedom under Hindu nationalist policies.
Observers note that the recent Christmas attacks reflect deeper tensions between religious communities. While the majority of incidents are local, they highlight a trend of growing intolerance that experts say needs urgent attention from both domestic authorities and the international community.
The SFJโs statement and proposals come amid calls for greater protections for religious minorities. Analysts warn that without stronger safeguards, attacks like these could continue to escalate, threatening the safety and rights of Christians across India.
The Christmas attacks serve as a reminder of the challenges facing minority communities in India and the ongoing debates over religious freedom and protection.
